Samarkand and Bukhara by fast train are genuinely world-class weekends. The Chimgan mountains offer skiing and hiking an hour out, and plov competitions double as a social calendar.

Sexual relations between men are against the law and punishable by up to three years’ imprisonment. The law does not specifically address same-sex sexual activity between women. Same-sex sexual activity is a taboo subject in Uzbekistani society, and there are no registered LGB organizations. - Effectively prohibited. Uzbekistan is among the strictest countries on psychotropics; stimulants are effectively not importable for residence. Families dependent on them should treat this as a hard bid filter.

- Codeine and tramadol have been confiscated from arriving travelers; declare everything and expect scrutiny.
